Symbian & Nokia Leads Smartphone Market; RIM-Apple-Android Not Far Behind

Although Symbian holds the lead at 47%, both RIM and Apple are making serious inroads in the worldwide smartphone market share. According the latest figures produced by Gartner, an information technology research firm, both Symbian and Nokia were still in a solid first place of the world’s smartphone market, both RIM and Apple are becoming a serious threat to each.

In a recently published study, Nokia has maintained an overall 36.4% of the worldwide smartphone market share, but saw a 2.2% loss last year. Symbian also dominated with a 52.4% market share, but those are worldwide figures and do not reflect the United States Market.

In the U.S.A., a recent Comscore survey shows both RIM and Apple are much larger than Symbian. With the increase of mobile web traffic, both Apple and Android are leading the pack. What all the other Operating Systems and Manufactures need to be concerned with is Google’s Android. According to recent reports, Android has been selling 60,000 handsets a month, and both Verizon and AT&T plan to release several devices this year.

Vom vedea…

Nokia, Intel team up in phone software race

Nokia, the world’s biggest maker of mobile handsets, said on Monday it would merge its Linux Maemo software platform, used in its flagship N900 phone, with Intel’s Moblin, which is also based on Linux open-sourced software, to create a new platform, MeeGo.

“They have understood the only way to beat Microsoft, Google and Apple is to do it through scale — get the platform to more devices,” said John Strand, owner and head of Strand Consult after the announcements at the Mobile World Congress fair.

“However, they have not realized it’s not about getting to many platforms, it’s about making something the consumer likes. The bees don’t go for the biggest garden, they go for the most beautiful flowers,” Strand said.

The cellphone industry is increasingly focusing on smartphones, devices with computer-like capabilities that have fatter margins than ordinary phones, whose sales may overtake those of other phones as early as this year.

LUCKY SEVEN ?

Microsoft’s long-awaited revamp of its mobile software follows a lukewarm reception for Windows Mobile 6.5 in October, which most analysts viewed as a poor competitor.

It has been losing the battle for advanced phone users over the past few years, taking just 8.8 percent of the global smartphone systems market last year, according to technology analysis firm Canalys, down from 13.9 percent the year before.

“We hope seven’s our lucky number,” Chief Executive Steve Ballmer told a news conference.

In the launch of Windows Phone 7 Microsoft has put an emphasis on appealing to everyday users as well as its core business market.

Phone 7 handsets to be made by companies including HTC, Samsung and Sony Ericsson, will feature touch screens with quick access to social networking functions from Facebook, music and video through Microsoft’s Zune software and games linked to its Xbox system.

Microsoft said its main network carrier partners are AT&T and France Telecom’s Orange and the new phones will be in stores by the holiday season at the end of the year.

“We’re really trying to go after the life market. People work, they live, and I think on their phone they don’t make a big distinction, so we need to support all aspects of somebody’s life,” Ballmer told Reuters Television in an interview.

However handset makers such as HTC, Samsung and Motorola are also turning to Google’s Android operating software, which is not only free but attracting a fast-growing developer community and already has 4.7 percent of the market.

Microsoft is the only major phone software maker to charge a license fee to handset makers.

Ballmer told Reuters Television he had no plans to change the company’s charging policy.

“Windows Phone 7 is a massive bet by Microsoft to try and get themselves back in the game. They’re going to throw a lot of money at it to reassert themselves in the sector,” said Ben Wood, director of UK-based telecoms research firm CCS Insight.

NOKIA, INTEL

Meanwhile the news from Intel and Nokia came as more of a surprise to the industry.

Nokia only rolled out its first Maemo phone — the result of a five-year development project — three months ago, with analysts seeing Maemo boosting the firm’s chances of succeeding in the higher end of the market.

The market for software platforms on cellphones is led by Nokia’s Symbian, but it has lost much ground lately to Apple, BlackBerry maker Research in Motion and to Google.

Nokia said it was still committed to using Symbian in most of its smartphones, but would use the new MeeGo in the most advanced models.

The software deal announced on Monday is also set to boost Intel’s chances of getting its chips into the cellphones of the Finnish company, which controls around 40 percent of the global phone market.

“We believe the partnership … will result in significant sales volumes for Intel,” said CCS Insight analyst John Jackson.

Nokia’s shares closed up 0.3 percent at 9.49 euros. The DJ Stoxx European technology sector index fell 0.3 pct.

LINUX

Google said it was relaxed about the development.

“Google benefits when anyone produces a great phone that enables the Web experience,” Vic Gundotra, who leads Google’s mobile engineering, told reporters. “If Intel and Nokia can deliver innovation we think that’s very exciting.”

Network operators have wanted a smaller number of operating systems, as supporting them is timely and costly, but the number has in recent years only increased.

Samsung, the world’s second-biggest handset maker, joined the party on Sunday by unveiling its first phone to use its own new operating system, called ‘bada’.

But now the open-source computer operating system Linux is starting to win traction, with Google using Linux for its Android platform, and Nokia rolling out its top-of-the-range model N900 using Linux Maemo.

“There has been a step change for Linux in mobile,” Morgan Gillis, head of the wireless Linux system user foundation LiMo, said in an interview. “No other operating system now matches the vendor coverage of Linux.

MWC about big alliances this year

You get the sense that things are different at this year’s Mobile World Congress. More at stake, more for the take. Acknowledgment that incremental will not do against the duopoly of Apple/Android. Microsoft reinvents Windows Mobile. Motorola announces (though separate from MWC) the spinoff of handset+set top box. Huge players, whom you might not have expected to getting together, got together. Nokia and Intel, vulnerable industry incumbents, teaming up, Nokia having lost traction with its outdated Symbian and unproven Maemo, Intel having done well with Atom in larger devices but struggling to contend with say Snapdragon/OMAP/Tegra in smartphones.

But the most interesting might be the announcement of Wholesale Applications Community, an agreement between 24 large industry players, consisting mostly of mobile operators but also few handset majors (LG, Samsung, SE) who have neither wholeheartedly committed to Android nor developed a alternative, to create a standard for applications that will run on different OSes. Undoubtedly a move to turn the very tides that have turned against operators, control having shifted and continuing to shift toward disruptive handset manufacturers and search/ad networks (i.e. Apple, Google, and the like), and one that reflects how dire the situation is for operators, considering:

  1. Data important as ever in US/WEU as voice revenues continue to decrease and messaging flattens out, making applications and search revenues critical
  2. Operators are increasingly pushed to the margins in apps, where fees made on the data transfer (an operator sweet spot) have traditionally made up  half to two-thirds of revenue, but expectation is that this drops quickly in the next few years, making way for content premiums and advertising revenues. I have some data from Strategy Analytics that shows data transfer dropping 10 percent every 4-5 years. It’s pretty steep.
  3. In search, I doubt the picture is any different. And while I don’t have data, I’d feel comfortable with putting my money on search engines and ad networks as key beneficiaries.

Which makes WAC big news. Difficult to follow through given the number of members and platforms this new standard needs to meet and the experience Adobe currently faces with Flash, but my guess is that it shouldn’t be as bad once they anchor Android as early adopter, which doesn’t seem inconceivable considering 10 of the 24 members are also part of the Open Handset Alliance.

Nokia Feel - Feels So Good

Nokia Beta Labs has introduced a new application to the world called Nokia Feel. The application tries to assist you by estimating your current emaotional state. The app tries to figure out your moods and matches them to the phone.

As a Nokia statement puts it:

Nokia Feel helps you discover what you can do with your device in a more spontaneous way. When you tell it how you feel, the application suggests a few things you could do. In this way, discovering the capabilities of your device can be emotional, surprising, and fun. When you open the application you can select how you feel – are you feeling Energetic, Lucky, Lonely, Happy, Hungry, Bored, Lost, Caring or Creative? And when you have told it how you feel, the application suggests a few things you could do.

We are not exactly sure which phones this app will hit but the video above does show it using the N97, so we presume that this will be for Symbian S60 touchscreen handsets, but we will await word from Nokia to be sure.

Symbian phone operating system goes open source

The group behind the world’s most popular smartphone operating system – Symbian – is giving away “billions of dollars” worth of code for free.

The Symbian Foundation’s announced that it would make its code open source in 2008 and has now completed the move. It means that any organisation or individual can now use and modify the platform’s underlying source code “for any purpose”. Symbian has shipped in more than 330m mobile phones, the foundation says.

It believes the move will attract new developers to work on the system and help speed up the pace of improvements. “This is the largest open source migration effort ever,” Lee Williams of the Symbian Foundation told BBC News. “It will increase rate of evolution and increase the rate of innovation of the platform.” Ian Fogg, principal analyst at Forrester research, said the move was about Symbian “transitioning from one business model to another” as well as trying to gain “momentum and mindshare” for software that had been overshadowed by the release of Apple’s iPhone and Google Android operating system.

Evolutionary barrier

Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia bought the software in 2008 and helped establish the non-profit Symbian Foundation to oversee its development and transition to open source. The foundation includes Nokia, AT&T, LG, Motorola, NTT Docomo, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone.  The group has now released what it calls the Symbian platform as open source code. This platform unites different elements of the Symbian operating system as well as components – in particular, user interfaces – developed by individual members.

Until now, Symbian’s source code was only open to members of the organisation. It can be downloaded from the foundation’s website from 1400 GMT. Mr Williams said that one of the motivations for the move was to speed up the rate at which the 10-year-old platform evolved. “When we chatted to companies who develop third party applications, we found people would spend up to nine months just trying to navigate the intellectual property,” he said.

“That was really hindering the rate of progress.” Opening up the platform would also improve security, he added.

‘Mind share’

Symbian development is currently dominated by Nokia, but the foundation hoped to reduce the firm’s input to “no more than 50%” by the middle of 2011, said Mr Williams. “We will see a dramatic shift in terms of who is contributing to the platform.” However, said Mr Williams, the foundation would monitor phones using the platform to ensure that they met with minimum standards. Despite being the world’s most popular smart phone operating system, Symbian has been losing the publicity battle, with Google’s Android operating system and Apple’s iPhone dominating recent headlines. “Symbian desperately needs to regain mindshare at the moment,” said Mr Fogg.

“It’s useful for them to say Symbian is now open – Google has done very well out of that.” He also said that the software “may not be as open and free as an outsider might think”. “Almost all of the open source operating systems on mobile phones – Nokia’s Maemo, Google’s Android – typically have proprietary software in them.” For example, Android incorporates Google’s e-mail system Gmail. But Mr Williams denied the move to open source was a marketing move.

“The ideas we are executing ideas came 12-18 months before Android and before the launch of the original iPhone,” Mr Williams told BBC News

iPhone market share takes its first plunge since debut

Since the iPhones debut, we have seen growth quarter after quarter. The last time the iPhone lost market share was in the 4th quarter of 2008 which according to API research, was not a significant drop. Fast forward to the 4th quarter of 2009 when Apple has a record qaurter for iPhone sales growing 18% year of year. The growth however big, was not enough to increase or maintain market share. The iPhone’s growth of 18% was trumped by the smart phone over all market growth of 26%. So what does this mean? It means Jon Rubinstein’s theory that there can be about 5 big players in the smart phone market could be true. Let’s take a quick look at Apple’s competition today when compared to the 4th quarter of 2008.

In 2008 Apple’s biggest competitors were RIM with its Blackberry lineup, Nokia and its s60 devices, Android with the G1, Samsung’s big player was the Instinct, Palm with the Centro and Treo Pro, and Microsoft with Windows Mobile 6.1 devices. Let’s be honest here, Apple didn’t have much competition. Apple’s market share was growing while almost everyone else was having one of their worst quarters ever. Fast forward to the 4th quarter of 2009. Now you have the iPhone 3GS which is basically the same as the 3G in the general consumers mind, however the competition has dramatically changed. What were the iPhones competitors in quarter 4 of 2009? Blackberry with the Bold, Bold 2, Storm 2, Tour, Pearl, Pearl Flip, and Curve, Palm with the Pre, Pixi, and Treo Pro, Android with the Moment, Hero, Eris, Droid, G1, MyTouch, Behold 2, Cliq, and of course all the variations of those same phones outside the U.S., Nokia now with the N97 Mini, N97, N900, E72, and the still famous E71, Microsoft now with Windows Mobile 6.5 and the HD2, TouchPro 2, Snap, Imagio, and Omnia 2. Obviously the competition has changed, companies like Motorola, Palm, and RIM are now growing once again. Apple did not do poorly, make no mistake, in fact they had a record quarter when it comes to iPhone sales. The market is shifting over from feature phones and messaging phones to smart phones. As people begin to use more powerful phones, the players in the smart phone arena will continue to see growth. Once the market is saturated, we will begin to see competition working to take customers from one another. Everyone now has the chance to stake their claim, so we will get to sit back and watch the innovation take place.
