Capacitive buttons control all life

Projects involving Conway’s Game of Life and utilizing a Nokia 3310 screen are quite popular with electronics hobbyists. [Droky] put these two together and went one step further by adding capacitive sensors to control the Game of Life. His work is a great example of how to use the Atmel QTouch capacitive sensor (QT100a datasheet). This chip does the heavy lifting that we’ve seen in other touch sensitive solutions. It operates from 2V-5.5V, requires only three capacitors and a resistor, has a one pin active high output, and sells for around $1 in low quantities. One thing [Droky] overlooked in his board layout is the ground pad on the bottom of the WSON6 chip. He was able to make it work by masking the trace that runs under the chip but you will want to alter the layout in your own designs.

If you’ve used the QT100a before we’d like to hear about your experience, and find out if button debounce handling is necessary with this chip. Let us know in the comments. You can see a video of it in action after the break.

Video: Break Dancing Fly - N82 Macro Video: Test Blog, Post - Full RSS

A while ago I asked WordPress about full RSS for my blog, and they mentioned Google Reader may just not be getting full RSS, but wordpress had it so I assumed there was nothing that could be done my end. Today, just read from Stefan on intomobile that I’ve actually just got partial feeds. A google search later and noticed stupidly that I haven’t even turned Full RSS on within wordpress settings (Didn’t see that first time round >_<).

So this is just a test post.

Postando do nokia E75

Welcome back Nokia: The N900

It’s no secret that we’ve been rather let down with Nokia of late. Our E75 suffered quality problems and the N97 was a disappointment from both hardware and software perspectives. In fact, in a sad indictment of the state of Nokia’s product portfolio, we recently had to declare that the mid-range N86 camera phone was the best device Nokia made. Our favourite Finnish phonemakers just didn’t seem to have a flagship device worthy of the name. Well, it looks like that’s about to change.

Ditching the rather long in the tooth S60 operating system and adopting instead the brand new, Linux based Maemo OS, the N900 Internet Tablet is probably the most feature-rich and capable phone on the planet. Not only does it have the technical ability but it seems to come with all the right eye candy too. We’ll know more once the N900 starts hitting shelves next month but it looks like it may be time to say “Welcome back, Nokia.” We missed you.

Hi tech PDA's and smartphones tap the translation market..

With more language translation applications becoming available on mobile phones, business travelers can now rely on their handsets instead of translation guides when they visit a foreign country, said mobile manufacturers.

Nelson Wee, Southeast Asia-Pacific marketing manager at Nokia, said business travelers are “always connected via their mobile phones” so having a mobile application that facilitates language translation ensures these travelers will not be “handicapped”–even without a translator–when they are in a foreign land.

Language translation tools enables multilingual translation in the form of text, e-mail, short message service (SMS), instant messaging (IM), speech, as well as in chatroom environments. This enables business travelers to communicate more effectively anywhere in the world, with the help of a portable translator that fits right in the palm of their hands.

Similar to Web-based translation portals, mobile translation applications offer a number of useful features, including speech generation–where text is converted into human speech rendered in the voice of a native speaker of the target language–and also speech recognition, where users can record voice clips and translate them into audio clips or text.

RIM and Nokia have highlighted a new method of translation that some applications have incorporated–translation of text from pictures.

Interlecta Translator for RIM’s BlackBerry, for example, supports this feature. The software tool allows users to take a picture containing text such as a road sign or food menu, with their mobile device, extract the text using optical character recognition (OCR) technology and translate it into the desired language.

How cool is that!

Category A circles and metro's to get Number Portability on New Year's Eve

Mobile Number Portability is all set come by the year’s end. An article in The Times Of India today said so. Here’s an excerpt from the article:

Mobile number portability (MNP) will be implemented from December 31 in metros and category ‘A’ service areas, and by 20th March, 2010, in rest of the country, telecom regulator TRAI said on Wednesday.

The MNP facility will enable subscribers to retain their cell phone numbers even after changing service providers.

The government earlier this month had said implementation of MNP would be delayed by three months as regulations were still being made. Issuing “Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability Regulations, 2009″, TRAI said the MNP facility shall be available only within a given licensed service area.

A subscriber holding a mobile number is eligible to make a porting request only after 90 days of the date of activation of his mobile connection. If a number is already ported once, the number can again be ported only after 90 days from the date of the previous porting. The cost to the subscriber seeking the porting is yet to be decided by TRAI.

The subscriber who wishes to port his mobile number should approach the recipient operator(the operator to whom the subscriber wants to port his number). The subscriber may be required to pay porting charges, if any, to the recipient operator.
Also, the subscriber must clear all the bills issued prior to the date of porting request.

BIZNESA IDEJA #1 Ekstraordināri zārki no Āfrikas.

Bubblino bubblin

Absolutely loved watching Bubblino spout his bubbles at Interesting (I promise this will be the last Interesting-related post!). It’s a bot built on Arduino that blew bubbles whenever anyone tweeted anything with #interesting09. It soon became part of the surroundings – I almost felt it would be unnatural if it was suddenly taken away. Thankfully that didn’t happen.

Reminded me of Baker Tweet. I think there’s something to be said for bots that use human-powered data to create something useful, or in Bubblino’s case, entertaining. I think they’re the future. Michael Arrington says something along the same lines here, where he speaks about Toy Bots. Also, I enjoyed reading this list of appliances that could potentially be much more fun ro use if they had Twitter integrated.

While on the subject of Arduino, I was at the launch of Nokia’s PUSHN900 event last week – the sample project built by Tinker.it which involved hacking four ’80’s objects with the N900, used Arduino too. (The N900 itself is built on Maemo). I think we’ll be hearing more of the platform in the coming months.

Opera Mini Beta 5 – Optimised for N97 et al.

The previous version of Opera Mini worked well on Symbian S60 3rd Edition handsets but wasn’t conceived in anticipation of the touch-screen version of the S60, S60 5th Edition, which can be found on the Nokia N97 and the 5800, to name two. As a result touch functionality didn’t work and the user had to fall back to the hardware keys of the N97 and the virtual keypad of the 5800.

Opera has now released Opera Mini Beta 5 which is a godsend for those with a touch-screen mobiles and brings with it some great new features that should have been part of the inbuilt browser of the Nokia N97, in particular. So, what does Opera Mini Beta 5 offer besides touch friendly browsing.

Tabbed Browsing
An awesome feature especially on a mobile device which has a small screen. The native S60 browser doesn’t handle multiple windows well and to force a new window you have to create a custom page/bookmark hack as the feature is not available natively. The way this has been implemented on S60 5th adds to the usability as the thumbnails of the page are shown in the tab, which will work well for those who prefer to see the colours/images of a page rather than read the name of the tab to identify it.

Select Text/Copy
One thing that Nokia have missed the boat on is the copying of content from the web browser with their S60 devices. Opera opens up this feature and is activated by pressing down on the screen until a balloon with “Select Text” appears. Once text is highlighted, by dragging a finger or stylus across the screen, another balloon pops up offering options to “Copy,” “Search,” or “Search with,” which allows you to select a search engine. Nice time saving features allowing information to be freed from the browser.

Save Page
You can save web pages to the device so they can be viewed offline. Another cool feature allowing pages to be saved, just like on a PC browser but for a mobile device, options can be set as to where you would like pages saved on the phone, to prevent those ‘low disk space’ errors!

On-Screen QWERTY Keyboard
A handy feature for the N97 which doesn’t have this natively. Sure, there is a physical keyboard but sometimes you aren’t typing enough to warrant opening the keyboard, but just enough that the on-screen number pad becomes an inconvenience.

Speed Dial
Opera Mini b5 can be set to open up on the Speed Dial page, a grid of 9 thumbnails representing your favourite sites, providing you with quick access to them from start up. This has replaced my Start.io homepage and instead the Start.io page can have a speed dial box.

Password Manager
If you hate signing-in to sites over and over again, the password manager will be a boon, although if you frequently misplace your phones, this feature may be better left unused.

I have been Opera Mini Beta 5 briefly, but some sites aren’t formatted correctly, resulting in text overlaps, yet these pages appear normally in the default S60 browser. There’s no bookmark sync, which might have been the feature to get me to install Opera on my PC! Due to the addition of kinetic scrolling for touch-screen devices, the screen no longer snaps to the edges of paragraphs, so when scrolling up and down, unless you keep your finger, thumb or stylus on a perfectly vertical trail, you will find the page moving horizontally also. On a positive note, browsing on Opera Mini remains snappy, great access to pages using speed dial and tabs adds to the experience. With the addition of the qwerty keyboard, convenience and speed seems to have been the primary focus of this release. This is great progress on a great app and a lot of thought seems to have gone into improving the mobile browsing experience, which can be a chore at times!

Give the app a try if you haven’t used it before: opera.com/mini/next.

Who developed the first Commercial LTE Modem ?

Well the answer is not Ericsson or Nortel or Nokia but Samsung. Seems Samsung is taking early lead in LTE device ecosystem.

Remember MetroPCS Inc. and Verizon Wireless have already revealed that Samsung is delivering test devices and commercial dualmode devices for their trial LTE networks

In a press release Samsung has made the claim. Press release says “Samsung Electronics Develops First Commercial LTE Modem for Mobile Phones”.

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a leading mobile phone provider, announced today that it has developed the first Long Term Evolution (LTE) modem that complies with the latest standards of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), which were released in March 2009. Utilizing Release 8 of the 3GPP, this LTE modem is a significant upgrade from the previous standard that was released in December 2008.

The modem, branded the Kalmia, supports download speed up to 100Mbps and upload speed of 50Mbps within the 20MHz frequency bandwidth. Users of a mobile device equipped with the LTE chipset can download a high-definition movie file (800MB) in one minute at speeds of 100Mbps, while simultaneously streaming four high-definition movies with no buffering.

Samsung also announced it has successfully developed a 3G baseband modem based on the Release 7 standard with an HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) Evolution platform. This modem, branded the Broom, allows download speeds of up to 28Mbps and upload speeds of 11.5 Mbps. This makes the Release 7 more than twice as fast as the Release 6 HSPA Service, which had a maximum download speed of 14.4Mbps.

Because the LTE and all other HSPA evolution models share the same platform, the new LTE modem is fully compatible with earlier standards. Through this technology, a mobile communications service provider can upgrade to HSPA service or evolve into a LTE network simultaneously in order to convert their existing networks to broadband.

In the future, this flexibility will be crucial as wireless mobile service providers will require compatibility with pre-existing systems, in order to offer LTE in urban areas while still supporting 3G in suburban or rural areas. The modem offers a multi-mode, which is a major requirement for LTE developers who are calling for inter-operability within pre-existing 3G networks.

“Our latest LTE standard chip-set will help realize the world’s first commercial LTE device,” said JongKyun Shin, Executive Vice President and head of Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics. “Currently, Samsung is partnering with LTE developers preparing for a LTE service launch in 2010 and will unveil a variety of LTE devices of different types and with diverse features and options, including memory cards, handheld devices and MID.”

Separately, Samsung Electronics has also developed the mobile WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e) modem chip, a product that is already resonating in the mobile market. The company has already adopted the modem into commercial WiBro handsets in Korea. With this new modem, Samsung has delivered WiMAX and LTE model solutions, which are the two major wireless mobile communications systems for the next generation. The company has also demonstrated a full lineup of modems from 2G/3G to modems for the next generation of mobile telecommunication systems with its HSDPA Evolution modems.

Samsung is also strengthening its position as a leader in mobile telecommunication system standards. Samsung currently holds the most chairman seats within the IEEE 802.16 Working Group, a WiMAX standardization association, and also chairs the WiMAX Forum, an affiliate organization. Additionally, Samsung is highly influential in securing many leading positions in other organizations such as the Technology Working Group.

At 3GPP, an association that specifies standards for LTE, Samsung ranks in the top group according to its number of contributions and has four seats in the wireless networking standardization working group executive board. Samsung has also served as the chair for two years in the steering committee of LSTI (LTE/SAE Trial Initiative), an organization that works closely with LTE. The company is also actively participating in various programs for NGMN (Next Generation Mobile Networks), a business association of global and leading mobile operators.

Nokia n97 vs. Iphone 3Gs - Battle of the Flagships

Lets get this straight – I am with 100% conviction completely biased against all things APPLE inc. However, unlike Apple, i adore all things Nokia.

Now, since i’ve made that statment, lets get on with this review. I’ve had the Iphone 3G ever since launch date in Canada, and i only bothered to get it because my phone provider was giving it to me for free as long as i paid the broadband access fee. It was a good deal, andwith all the hoopla surrounding the phone back then i said to myself, “why not try it out and see what all this commotion is about?”

The nokia n97, i received as gift almost 3 months ago while i was in Saudi Arabia, and is my primary phone currently.

Verdict: If you are going to choose between buying these phone’s hands down choice: Apply Iphone 3Gs.

OMG?WTF?WHY? so many of you may say.

The reason the Iphone wins in my opinion is because the phone is just..much better in all ways. Firstly, the phone is built with quality materials. Now i don’t know exactly what the damn phone is made out of but i do know when you hold the Iphone, it feels nice, sturdy, and strong. When you drop the Iphone, as you will do on many occasions unless your an alien or Oprah, the phone will not shatter, or break into tiny pieces, nor get scratched. Its a solid phone. The Nokia n97, even after its cost of 1000$ during launch, will fall, and the battery will go flying one way, while the back casing another, and you WILL have a dent in its soft plastic shell. Its pathetic. How can Nokia explain such a cheap construction when someone pays such a high price for a phone?

What ticks me off most, is the touch screen on the Nokia. Its complete junk, and non responsive. Often times your phone will lag, you won’t be able click, freezes, wrong programs opening up when your clicking, very frustrating. The Iphone, in my 1 year of use, has got to be the best touch screen interface i have ever used, and i’ve used a lot. Especially because of a dual input interface, which is very accurate (two fingers registered on the screen as separate points). Nokia does not support this.

Iphone 3G vs. Nokia n97 ?

Nokia shipped the n97 with a faulty operating system. Those launch phone’s are glitchy beyond hell. For those of you who have one, the unlocking function on the phone will drive you mad. Even with the new firmware update, problems are still evident in the phone.

I have to say, I have never bought another manufacture’s phone except Nokia since day 1. I loved Nokia, but then, i knew about no one else. Once the Iphone came into my life, there was no turning back. I know many of you will get into the specifications and say Nokia blasts the Iphone out of the water, but to be fair, no one even uses half those features on a day to day basis, and when its hard enough making calls, those other features become useless. In addition the new flagship Iphone 3Gs, comes pretty close to matching most if not exceeding most of the specifications of the n97.

A cellphone should not frustrate you, but rather support you, and the Iphone supports me.

To ostatnie powinno cieszyć nas wszystkich.

Najciekawsza część z tej notatki:

This week, there have been a number of speculative stories suggesting that Nokia will not allow for operator customization of Maemo devices. Seems a few people are getting ahead of themselves. As we have said over the past couple of weeks, our plan with Maemo is to focus on the consumer experience – integrating applications and services from Nokia, our broad community of developers and publishers and, of course, from our operator customers. While we have not announced immediate plans to offer an operator variant for the N900, there are many customization points for operators on the N900. It would be absolutely incorrect to assume that we will not offer operators the ability to tailor future Maemo devices to suit their needs.

Of course, it is fantastic to see the positive buzz building around Maemo and the Nokia N900, so we wanted to clear up these few important details that appear to have been misunderstood.

Nokia 7705 Twist

Nokia N900 Review

The N900 has a side-sliding QWERTY keyboard and an 800×480-pixel resistive touch screen. According to the man who let the cat out of the bag, the build quality is similar to the Nokia E75.

The device will also have a 5-megapixel camera with F2.8 lens, 32GB of onboard memory with a microSD card slot for up to 32GB (bringing the total capacity to a whopping 64GB), a micro-USB port, 1,320mAh battery, GPS and TV-out. But these details are not as interesting as the Maemo 5 software that the device is running on.

Without doubt this is Nokia’s hottest handset to date. And one we think has every chance of going toe–to–toe with the very best smartphones out there. And that means the iPhone 3GS and HTC Hero.
