Smart phones are killing the earth. It’s true. Read on true believers, and I’ll tell you how and what you can do to save the planet.
I remember the old days when only the ‘really important’ people had Blackberry’s and Treo’s. Then, all of a sudden, smart phones passed the magic tipping point (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tipping_point_(sociology) where everyone had one. Now, anyone without a smart phone is one of the uncool minority.
The old phones would last forever on a single battery charge. I remember my old Nokia that came free with a two-year contract could go as long as two weeks on a mix of standby and talk time. Right now I have a Blackberry Pearl that lasts about 2 days at the most. The online specs peg it at “up to 15 days” on standby and “up to 4 hours” on talk time (http://na.blackberry.com/eng/devices/blackberrypearl8100/pearl_specifications.jsp).
In comparison, the Ipod advertises similar specs (http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html).
An article on the new Motorola Droid handset in the Nov 16 Business Week (www.businessweek.com/go/techmaven) says the battery life “seems decent- good enough to get you through a long day.” Are you kidding me? A one day charge on the phone!
Now, think about how smart phones are impacting the energy needs and consumption in the world. If you are charging your telephone every day, and x number of people are doing this, that’s a lot of power draining out. Like most corporations who kiss *** to gain public favor, the phone manufacturers are big on going green. Meanwhile they create more powerful phones that play more apps, use more power, and increase energy consumption. Apple is among the worst offenders. They pulled out of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce because of a disagreement over environmental policy.
I’d like to poll many of the most influential, radical, tree-hugging, dope-smoking, earth hippies out there and see what type of phones are the most common. Are they power-guzzling smart phones or old school phones that are a little more earth-friendly?
What kind of phones do Barack Obama, Nancy ‘cap-and-trade’ Pelosi, and Harry Reid use? Or better yet, to get a definitive answer, what kind of phone does Al Gore have?
